The 40th Annual World Science Fiction Convention was held in Chicago, Illinois
from September 2-6, 1982. Guest of Honor were A. Bertram Chandler, Frank
Kelly Freas and Lee Hoffman.
A Bertram
Chandler as large as life on the Front Cover as drawn by Kelly Freas. (It appears that Jack and Lee are shooting at Kelly who is hiding on the back cover.)
It appears to have been a busy program. There was an interview with A.
Bertram Chandler at 12:00 on the Saturday, Guest of honor speeches and book
signings on three of the days.
Nikey Roessner-Herman reported in the November 1982 edition of Locus as
follows.
Ross Pavlac presented A. Bertram Chandler, explaining that the convention
committe had wanted to pay homage to those who were long established, with a
large influence on others, but under -honored.
Chandler drew together the two threads of Chicago and science fiction, first
with humerous anecdotes about his two brief former visits to the city and
Chicago jokes, including one about a meat packing plant murder. Then he
traced the roots of sf and did a little projecting of its future. He
amused the audience by recounting ridiculous story plots he had run across
during his own growth and exposure to the field.
