Letter
ABOUT FOUR YEARS ago my New York agent, Scott Meredith, did a deal on my behalf with the Japanese publishing house Hayakawa Shobo. Several of my older novels, all in the Grimes/ Rim Worlds series, were sold to Hayakawa. Very shortly thereafter a correspondence was initiated between Koichiro Masahiro Noda, the translator, Nguo Khato, the artist responsible for both covers and interior illustrations, Hiroshi Hayakawa, Executive Vice-president of Hayakawa Shobo, and myself. Also, before publication of each book, there would be telephone calls from Khato-san in Tokyo to discuss the art work. (This I really appreciated; no Occidental publisher or editor has ever consulted me about covers or illustrations.) A quite good advance was paid and, at half-yearly intervals, royalties. One of the earlier books was recently reissued and there was a new negotiation of terms which was very advantageous to myself. Meanwhile, a cc of each new novel in the series is sent directly to Hayakawa, the financial details being ironed out by my agent...
