A. BERTRAM CHANDLER SAYS:
Thanx for the Summer (Spring to us at the moment of writing) SFWA FORUM, received yesterday. I shall be obliged if any and all future issue, are sent to me at my home address, as above, and not % Union-Bulkships. The reason for this is that I am fast approaching retiring age as a shipmaster.
I read with interest your piece on writinq and drinking. It is, I suppose, to do two things properly at the same time, although I have heard that the late Thorne Smith used Gin for a working fuel.
Possibly my own solution to the problem of drinking and writing is better than yours. It is a well known fact that nudist CLUBS throughout the commonwealth are extremely wowserish. Liquor of any kind is not allowed on the premises of the majority of such organizations, and our own club is no exception to this rule.
So when I am enjoying a spell, of leave in summer, my wife drives me out to the club - where I have a caravan with all mod. cons. - steals all my clothes and leaves me there with my typewriter and an ample supply of paper. The only drinks obtainable from the club's own shop are various varieties of lolly water.
The amount of work done is in inverse ratio to the amount of sunshine and the availability of interesting company...
